In a statement, Genting Berhad, owner of Resorts World Las Vegas, emphasized that the company and its subsidiaries are committed to conducting business with the highest integrity and in compliance with all relevant laws and industry standards.
This response follows the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s (NGCB) filing on Thursday, August 15, which listed violations questioning the company’s commitment to compliance. The NGCB also linked Resorts World to a California sports betting scandal, alleging the company laundered millions of dollars for illegal bookmaker Mathew Bowyer over 18 months.
According to the complaint, during this period, Bowyer gambled on credit while casino employees were aware of his illegal activities. Earlier in August, Bowyer pled guilty to three federal charges related to his illegal betting business.
In its statement, Genting outlined the issues raised and potential actions the NGCB and the Nevada Gaming Commission might take. The NGCB’s key concerns include Resorts World’s failure to verify the source of funds from suspected bookmakers and the casino’s lack of action to ban or restrict two alleged illegal bookmakers and a convicted illegal gambling operator.
NGCB concerned about ‘culture of compliance’
Additionally, two casino employees failed to report the suspected bookmakers to their superiors and even referred customers to them. The casino also hired the wife of one suspected bookmaker as an independent agent, and she acted as a casino host for her husband’s illegal activities.
The NGCB has expressed serious concerns about Resorts World’s overall “culture of compliance.”
In its statement, Genting acknowledged that it may face fines, disciplinary action, or even the loss of its license. Regulators could also assign a supervisor if the Nevada Gaming Commission decides to revoke or suspend Resorts World Las Vegas’ gaming license.
“The allegations are related to operations at Resorts World Las Vegas,” the company stated. “Genting and RWLV LLC take these accusations very seriously.”
Genting also mentioned that it has “sought legal advice” and is “committed to resolving the issues raised by the NGCB and ensuring that Resorts World Las Vegas adheres to all regulatory and legal standards.”
