Hoiana Resort & Golf in Vietnam is moving forward with a major expansion valued at approximately US$1 billion.
Nguyen Vinh Tran, general director of Hoi An South Development Ltd, presented details of the Phase 2 project to government officials and members of the business community on 8 January. According to Tran, the next phase will feature a large-scale international convention centre capable of hosting up to 2,500 attendees, along with more than 1,000 new five-star hotel rooms.
The development will also include a family-oriented retail and entertainment zone, as well as a second golf course. The new course will be supported by a professional training centre and golf academy offering internationally recognised certifications.
Recognised as “Asia’s Leading Fully Integrated Resort” at the 2024 World Travel Awards, Hoiana is situated along Vietnam’s central coastline near Danang, formerly part of Quang Nam Province. The resort’s first phase represented a US$1.2 billion investment and began construction in 2016, with an initial opening target of 2020.
However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the company to scale back operations, resulting in significant workforce reductions while keeping the resort operational. Hoiana ultimately celebrated its official grand opening in 2021. Phase 1 includes four five-star hotels, 20 dining venues, and a Robert Trent Jones–designed golf course. The casino currently features 140 gaming tables and more than 270 electronic gaming machines.
Growing Danang tourism
Hoiana’s developers plan to invest a total of US$4 billion across seven development phases, with the full project scheduled for completion by 2029. In February, newly appointed CEO Alan Teo, formerly the COO of Philippines-based NUSTAR Resort, said Phase 2 construction is expected to begin in 2025. A specific groundbreaking date has not yet been announced.
According to The Investor, Hoiana aims to position itself as a flagship tourism destination in Danang. The area welcomed an estimated 17 million visitors in 2025, including 7.6 million international tourists, representing a 25% year-on-year increase. This growth continued momentum from 2024, when tourism rose 32% compared to 2023 and reached 135% of pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019.
Danang is known for its unspoiled beaches and a wide range of nearby attractions, including the Marble Mountains, Son Tra Peninsula, several Buddhist temples, the iconic Golden Bridge and Dragon Bridge, and the UNESCO-listed Hoi An Ancient Town. All of these destinations are within approximately an hour’s drive of Danang International Airport.
The resort currently employs around 2,700 people, with Vietnamese nationals accounting for 98% of the workforce. Nguyen said the expansion is expected to generate approximately 2,000 additional jobs. He also noted that Hoiana is projected to contribute more than VND2 trillion (US$76.1 million) in annual tax revenue, roughly double its contribution in 2025.
